Social Media Optimization vs. Social Media Marketing |
|
Social media marketing is the word du jour for everything related to leveraging the power of social media. Here at New Nectar, we use another term to help differentiate between organically leveraging social media (usually using the 3 r’s mentioned above,) and actively promoting your business via social media. Social media optimization (SMO) is the organic use of social media to lead traffic back to the main webpage; and to create buzz, interest, and interaction on the social media platform that enhances a users perception of a company, product, or person. Social Media Marketing (SMM) is active promotion of products and services on social media using either free or paid means. Free means would be advertising promotions or coupons in the content streams of social networks. Paid is the use of either PPC advertising on Facebook or the creation of specialty content such as applications, games, and contests that encourage interaction. *These terms can be compared to those used in the leveraging of search engines to bring visitors to a website. Search engine optimization (SEO) works to organically pull more searchers in – while search engine marketing (SEM) includes the purchase of PPC advertising on search engines like Google and Bing. There is some discrepancy in the use of the terms SMO / SMM just as there are between SEO / SEM. Some sources use social media optimization as a broader term that encompasses social media marketing. Regardless of how the terms are bandied about –optimization & marketing are key activities in both social media and search engine campaigns.
